News from St. Clare Catholic School, Portland
Earlier this spring, several of our eighth grade students submitted their work to the 2016 Sala Kryszek Writing and Art Contest. This contest encourages youth to evaluate history, foster an awareness of the Holocaust, and broaden their minds in the areas of art, history, civics, sociology, and literature. For the competition, students are presented with a prompt that becomes their cue to create a piece of writing or a work of art. Students must relate their written and artistic responses in some way to what they've learned about the Holocaust. This year, students were asked to consider the following prompt:
How could the Holocaust happen in a country like Germany, a country with abundant education and people who achieved great advancements in science, art, music, literature, and philosophy? Do you think that something like this still happens in the world today? What steps can you take now and in the future to offset these events from taking place?
We are very pleased to announce that the work of three St. Clare eighth grade students was recognized:
Writing – Middle School Olivia D. – third place,
Coming Back Home
Art – Middle School Lizzy – second place,
Toxic Olivia D. – third place,
We Must Everett – honorable mention,
Refugees
All award winners were honored with a ceremony at the Multnomah Athletic Club on Sunday, May 1, where they met members of the Kryszek family and other members of the Holocaust Speakers’ Bureau. We offer our sincere congratulations to these talented students! May they always seek new challenges and aspire to new heights!
